In the present, after serving 15 years in prison for the murder of Alexandra Forrest, Daniel Gallagher is paroled with the goals of reconnecting with his family and proving his innocence. In the past, 2008, Dan celebrates his 40th birthday and first meets the charming colleague whose death would eventually lead to his incarceration and the destruction of the life he knew.

In the past, an intensely passionate connection turns sour when Dan realizes Alex wants more from him than the impression she's been giving.
