Description

Based on Alex Haley’s best-selling novel about his African ancestors, "Roots" is the story of Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The saga follows the different generations up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte’s grandson, Chicken George (Ben Vereen) gained emancipation.

In 1776, a nation fights for freedom - but not for all. Kunta Kinte escapes again and is crippled by slave catchers. He marries, gains a daughter and loses hist long-time friend Fiddlers. Another chance for escape arises, but Kunta sacrifices it to care for his wife and the newborn he names Kizzy, an African word for "stay put".
