Following the passing of engineer Mark Nuyens, his housewife partner, Karen Van Dijck, and their adolescent son, Maarten, make a shocking discovery: Mark had been leading a double life and was legally married to another, Nina Overstijns, in a different province. Only Mark's brother, Ruben, was aware of the deception. What follows is the fallout as the two women deal with the betrayal, the grief, and each other.
Maarten adopts his late father's hobby, photography, despite his mom's lame objection the chemicals are 'dangerous'. His teacher enjoys a dance evening with her, but Ruben's advice to take the initiative backfires. Taunted by his ex's cocky boyfriend in class, Maarten pierces his hand. Now Karen accepts to see a therapist, but rudely rejects her analysis Maarten's way of mourning should be respected, yet gives in later.
